Bowman Gray vendor to donate proceeds in honor of veteran racer who died in mid-race crash

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (WGHP) — Saturday will mark a week since the passing of 53-year-old Robbie Brewer.

He suffered a medical emergency on the track, causing him to crash.

At Bowman Gray Stadium, a vendor is hoping to honor Brewer on Saturday by lighting up the stands.

FOX8 spoke with the vendor as well as with Brewer’s fiancée about how they can let Brewer’s legacy continue to live on.

Brewer was a long-time competitor at Bowman Gray Stadium and was competing in the sportsman division Saturday night when a medical emergency on the track caused him to crash.

Emergency crews rushed him to the hospital, where he later died, leaving many hearts broken.

“One of the drivers that actually raced with Robbie … came up to the trailer. He said, ‘Hey, Robbie’s gone.’ And I was just in shock for a few minutes there,” said Owner of S&P Lemonade, Seth Caldwell.

While Brewer was known for his racing, his fiancée, Angel McCarter, said he was also known as a loving partner and selfless person.

“He was just one of those people that generally lit up the room whenever he would … It’s kind of cliche because everybody says that, but he truly did,” McCarter said.

Caldwell wants to honor that legacy and reached out to Brewer’s family on how he can achieve that goal.

On Saturday, all proceeds from every light-up cup sold at Cladwell’s lemonade truck will go towards Victory Junction, which is a non-profit organization that helps children with serious illnesses and chronic medical conditions by providing life-changing camp experiences in honor of Brewer.

“The family … requested that in lieu of flowers … That’s where we got the idea of giving our donations to Victory Junction as well. Just because we could tell that it was something that was special to the family. Flowers … wilt away. They die off. But something like this is something that’s going to stick forever,” Caldwell said.

It’s a way to reflect who Brewer was as a person.

“We’ve set a goal of $6,868 … We did that because Robbie’s number for a great deal of his career was number 68 … Our goal is between the sale of the cup lights and between other donations that we bring in. We’d like to be able to hand Victory Junction at least $6,868 in honor of Robbie,” Caldwell said.

Caldwell mentioned that you don’t only have to buy a light-up cup on Saturday to donate to the cause.
