Woman receives less than 5 years for her part in the robbery and death of a man in Minneapolis

A woman will spend almost 5 years in prison for her role in connection with a fatal shooting last year in Minneapolis.

Megan Renee Karjala, 24, was convicted of first-degree aggravated robbery and will serve a 57-month (4.75-year) sentence. She will receive credit for 183 days served.

Karjala was reportedly involved in the robbery and death of 28-year-old Da’Vonte Jovan Adams in May of 2024.

Karjala told officers she and Vernon Sirhyde Archie, 28, were “desperate for money” and plotted to steal a vehicle.

Karjala had recently matched with Adams on a dating app, and he said he wanted to meet her in person.

She then reportedly arranged a meeting date and waited with Archie to steal Adams’ vehicle.

“This is the one. He probably has a car. He is going to pull up, and then we can just do whatever,” Karjala recalled Archie saying to her.

When Adams went to their agreed meeting place, Karjala and Archie attempted to get his car keys. However, when Adams ran from the duo, Archie allegedly chased after him and shot him.

Karjala said she pulled out a pistol of her own and held Adams at gunpoint until he gave them his keys, court documents state.

Adams was later taken to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Karjala and Archie were later arrested by St. Paul police, who were responding to a report of shots being fired a few days after Adams’ death. Police said they found shell casings in Archie’s pocket and on the floor of the stolen car he was driving.

The casings matched with one found near Adams’ body, and analysis from the Bureau of Criminal Apprehension found all the casings matched with a Springfield .45 caliber pistol, which court documents state was found in Karjala’s bag.

Archie was later convicted of second-degree murder.
