(KRON) — All lanes of southbound Highway 101 in San Jose were blocked early Thursday afternoon as California Highway Patrol officers investigated a fatal pedestrian collision.

CHP officers responded at 11:49 a.m. to southbound 101 below the McKee Road overcrossing. A woman had fallen off the overcrossing and landed on the busy highway below, investigators said.

A vehicle collided with the pedestrian, causing fatal injuries, according to authorities. CHP officers said the victim was about 40 years old.

Traffic gridlocked as southbound traffic was diverted off Highway 101 to Alum Rock Avenue. The driver who struck the woman remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators.

All lanes of Highway 101 reopened just after 2 p.m.
