Two Bloomington Women Arrested in Death of 3-Year-Old

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — Two Bloomington women have been arrested in connection with the death of a 3-year-old girl, the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office announced Thursday.

Deputies were called to the 4000 block of North Thomas Road on Aug. 8 for a welfare check and found the child unconscious and not breathing. She was taken by ambulance to IU Health Bloomington Hospital and later flown to Riley Hospital for Children in Indianapolis, where she remained until she was pronounced dead on Aug. 13.

The next day, detectives arrested Keera L. Braun, 27, and Millissa D. Hicks, 50, both of Bloomington. Braun faces one count of Level 1 felony neglect of a dependent and two counts of Level 6 felony neglect of a dependent. Hicks faces one count of Level 1 felony neglect of a dependent and one count of Level 6 felony neglect of a dependent.

Both were booked into the Monroe County Correctional Center.

The investigation remains active, and authorities have not released further details about the circumstances surrounding the child’s death.

The sheriff’s office noted that the charges are accusations and the defendants are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
