BATON ROUGE, La. (Louisiana First) — A Louisiana state legislative maps case is now on hold after a judge’s mandate.
The attorney general’s office reviewed the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals decision not to rule Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act (VRA) unconstitutional and determined that another judge at the Fifth Circuit held the mandate in place.
The case centers around how district maps are drawn in the state. The decision by the court upholds a judge’s earlier ruling that blocked Louisiana’s state legislative maps by finding they “packed and cracked” Black communities in violation of Section 2, VRA’s central remaining provision.
The case is paused at least until the Supreme Court re-hears the arguments in October.
