The campaign, called “I-485 Alive,” is a 90-day enforcement and education effort focused on improving driver behavior and reducing crashes along the busy highway. This comes just as federal investigators released details about the deadly wreck that happened on July 26 near the Dixie River Road overpass, just west of the Charlotte Douglas International Airport.
According to a preliminary report released on Thursday by the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), the crash involved three vehicles: a Honda SUV, a Chrysler minivan, and a parked tractor-trailer. The SUV and minivan collided while driving southbound, then both struck the back of the trailer, which was stopped on the shoulder.
The impact killed six people, including both drivers, 16-year-old Logan Paul Sauer, of Mooresville, and 27-year-old Samuel Jacob Holmes, and four minivan passengers, 23-year-old Taylor Willis, 8-year-old Kamron Wood, 3-year-old Addyson Holmes, and 1-year-old Brynlon Holmes. One additional passenger, 16-year-old Katelynn, was seriously hurt.
The truck driver was not injured, authorities said.
The weather was clear and the roads were dry at the time. Investigators are still working to determine what caused the initial contact between the SUV and the minivan.
In response, the “I-485 Alive” campaign is bringing together multiple agencies, including NC State Highway Patrol, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police, and the Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office, to increase patrol visibility, enforce traffic laws, and promote safe driving on the highway.
The NTSB’s investigation into the July 26 crash is ongoing.
