RIVERTON, Utah (ABC4) — A 21-year-old riding an e-bike passed away after being struck by a utility vehicle traveling at high speeds Thursday.

Owen Thomsen, 21, was struck by a white utility vehicle just before 6 a.m. while crossing 12600 South in Riverton, according to Josh Lee, a spokesperson for the Riverton Police Department.

Thomsen was taken to the hospital, but succumbed to his injuries soon after arriving. Lee says he was hit inside the crosswalk and was thrown over 180 feet during the collision.

Police believe the driver was traveling at high speeds and possibly trying to “beat a red light.”

Officers are currently investigating the incident and reviewing nearby surveillance footage.

Riverton PD acknowledged the e-biker was inside of a crosswalk, but wishes to remind the public that e-bikes are not street legal and to avoid riding them on the roads.
