The St. Louis County Sheriff’s Office said an 80-year-old woman died Wednesday after being found unresponsive in Lake Vermillion.
A 911 call was placed from the lake by family members around 5:55 p.m., who had been able to pull her to shore on Blueberry Island and begin CPR, according to the sheriff’s office.
First responders were able to reach the island and transport the woman back to the mainland and to the hospital. Despite life-saving treatment at the scene and the hospital, the woman was pronounced dead.
She was identified by the sheriff’s office as Marit Smaby-Nowlin of St. Paul.
She had been in the area visiting on vacation.
