De Bremaeker, an immigrants’ rights managing attorney for Centro Legal de la Raza, is working the case on behalf of the detainees. According to the attorney, the minor detained is 17 years old, and another detainee is described as one with a severe disability.
ICE agents knocked on the door of the Oakland home, and someone answered the door, De Bremaeker said. The agents entered and arrested the people living at the house.
“No child should ever be in a detention facility, and there are laws protecting children against that,” Bremaeker told KRON4 outside of the San Francisco ICE Field Office on Sansome Street.
Bremaeker said the detained teenager is “afraid,” adding he was taken to a hotel to sleep. According to the attorney, the conditions at this ICE facility are abominable. He says the facility has no beds, and detainees are forced to sleep on the floor with only a piece of plastic as a blanket.
“He’s very afraid. Since yesterday afternoon, has hasn’t spoken to any loved one,” Bremaeker added. “Regardless of the circumstances of the arrest, people still have due process, protections. Children should not be, under any circumstance, detained in a facility like this that’s for adults — much less a facility that isn’t really meant to hold anybody for over a few hours.”
De Bremaeker said it is unclear whether any of the detainees have been charged with a crime. Tuesday’s ICE raid in Oakland is the first one that his organization is aware of in the city.
KRON4 contacted ICE for comment about the incident. We did not hear back in time for publication.
