Officials: Sterling man charged after his dogs died in hot car

STERLING, Va. (DC News Now) — A man was charged after his two dogs died from hyperthermia inside a car on a hot summer day.

On Wednesday, the Loudoun County Animal Services (LCAS) said 34-year-old Manuel Ovando was charged with two counts of felony animal cruelty. His dogs, 3-year-old Charlito and 5-year-old Bella, were inside an unattended car for a long time during a day when it was hotter than 80 degrees outside.

According to LCAS, someone called for help. Humane law enforcement officers responded and tried life-saving efforts, but the dogs were determined to have died already.

Ovando was taken to the Loudoun County Adult Detention Center without bond.
