According to Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department records, the attack happened around 2 a.m. on Saturday, August 9, at a bar in the 300 block of Brevard Street in uptown Charlotte.
When CMPD officers arrived, they found a man outside a bar with a severe cut on his left hand. Nearby, they also found the suspect, identified as Matthew Terry King, 39, covered in blood, with a large machete-style blade and brass knuckles at a table next to him.
Witnesses told CMPD that earlier in the night, an argument broke out between King and others inside the bar. Staff eventually removed King from the business. But about 30 minutes later, King returned to the area, reportedly armed.
According to court documents, King approached one of the victims from behind and said, “Remember me?” before trying to hit him in the head with brass knuckles. He then reportedly swung the machete down toward the man’s head. The victim raised his hand to block the blow, resulting in a deep cut that required surgery, court records stated.
Police said another person also suffered a minor cut while helping get King under control. Witnesses told CMPD they were able to hold King down until police arrived.
Officers arrested King early Saturday morning and took him to the hospital for minor injuries.
King is now facing multiple charges, including attempted first-degree murder, assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill, inflicting serious injury, assault with a deadly weapon, and driving while impaired. King is currently being held without bond.
This case is due back in court at the end of August.
