WINNEBAGO, Ill. (WTVO) — The Winnebago County Fair is celebrating its 40th year with longtime Rockford radio personality Steve Summers as the master of ceremonies for the county fair pageants, a role he has cherished since the 1980s.

This year, he was honored as the 2025 Fair Person of the Year for his dedication and contributions to the fair.

“Marsha Stavros, who was the pageant coordinator way back in the 80s, reached out to me. And she was one of the ladies that you never said no to, and she got me into it,” Summers said.

Summers’ voice is familiar to listeners of Rockford radio, as he currently serves as morning host for 95.3 The Bull. He previously worked at 97ZOK and WXXQ.

“It means a lot to me to be a part of this, because I see the confidence growing on the ladies, and it’s just really unique to get to see them year after year and their growth,” Summers added.

Fair Association President Deb Runte acknowledged the importance of Summers’ role, stating, “He helps it to go much more smoothly, because a few of us can only do so much. We need the help of others.”

The Winnebago County Fair is in full swing, offering a variety of attractions including rides, animals, and fried food. However, the county fair pageants remain a highlight for many attendees.

Summers has fond memories of seeing past pageant winners return with their own children as contestants. “I look back on the pageant and say, ‘boy, what an opportunity I had to get to see ladies grow up,'” he reflected.

Summers has no plans to step down as MC anytime soon, continuing to guide and support the next generation of participants.

In 2024, Rockford Mayor Tom McNamara proclaimed May 4th as Steve Summers Day in honor of his decades of entertaining listeners.
