Kunce served for 43 years and submitted his resignation in December 2024.
The Yard Foundation, a Chicago-based charity for firefighters, started a fundraiser for Kunce and his family, saying, “Chief Kunce faces his own Mayday call—a battle against stage 4 cancer. This is the toughest fight of his life, and he shouldn’t have to face it alone.
“Throughout his distinguished career, Chief Kunce has been a rock—a steady leader known for his deep knowledge and unwavering commitment to service. He is the kind of firefighter you always want by your side on a tough call, the leader who always had your back. He has been a pillar of the fire service and an inspiration to all who know him,” the fundraiser said.
