Despite some shaky weather this summer, DPW officials say crews are working hard to repave all of these streets.
Drivers who take Glenn Drive and Dearborn Dearborn Street on Indy’s east side have an especially bumpy ride. Multiple blocks in the area are impacted by uneven pavement and potholes. The Department of Public Works says it’s working hard to repair the roads.
“These numbers are actually down from our peak time,” said Kyle Bloyd, Chief Communications Officer of Indy DPW. “I want to say we get about 9,000 open complaints at one time. That’s the peak in April.”
So far this year, crews have filled 394,000 potholes across the city, using 7,900 tons of mix. DPW says people can file complaints with the Indianapolis Mayor’s Action Center. Contact information for the Mayor’s Action Center is available here.
“This year, we’re around 34,000 pothole complaints on the season,” Bloyd said. “Now, comparing this to this time last year, we were something around 14,000 higher.”
Bloyd added that pothole complaints typically increase in the winter, when changes in temperature cause craters to form in the roadway.
“As you have that freeze-thaw cycle, that’s really where you’re going to have more of your obvious damage in terms of your potholes on the road, seeing that damage to the road,” said Bloyd. “If the weather stays nice, you should see crews out working on the roads in order to repair as many roads as possible. DPW believes they’re making headway despite some challenges this summer.
“We’re doing impactful work. We’re really taking it to these numbers, and I think you can probably really start to see that as we get through construction season.”
