Domestic incident leads to chase, police shooting

INDIANAPOLIS — A reported domestic disturbance led, hours later, to a brief pursuit and a police shooting on the near northwest side, police say.

According to Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department, officers responded around 9 p.m. Wednesday to a domestic disturbance in the 7700 block of Knue Road. The victim reported being assaulted by a man with a gun.

By the time officers arrived, the suspect had already left the home in a vehicle. Investigators were able to get a description of the car.

Around 12 a.m. Thursday, an officer spotted the vehicle at the intersection of East 30th and Ruckle streets on the near north side. The officer requested backup before trying to pull the vehicle over.

When officers turned on their lights and sirens, the suspect refused to stop, leading to a short vehicle pursuit that ended in the 400 block of West 28th Street.

IMPD said two people got out of the car; at least one of them fired shots at police, leading one officer to return fire.

Police said both suspects managed to get away despite a search that included K9 officers and an IMPD drone. Both remain at large.

Detectives recovered cartridge casings near where the suspects ran away. Police found their vehicle in the 500 block of West 28th Street.

The officer who returned fire is a seven-year IMPD veteran and was equipped with a body camera and an in-car video system, both of which were activated during the incident. The officer has been placed on administrative leave, which is standard procedure in police shootings.

The IMPD Critical Incident Response Team is leading the criminal investigation. A separate investigation is being conducted by IMPD Internal Affairs.

The IMPD Victim Assistance Unit is working to support the initial domestic violence victim with resources.
