Andrew “Drew” Adaway, 37, was sentenced Thursday, August 7, 2025, by District Judge Donald Hathaway Jr. to life at hard labor without the possibility of probation, parole, or suspension of sentence. The mandatory sentence follows his July 22, 2025, conviction for the June 3, 2022, killing of 72-year-old Bobbie Young.
Prosecutors said Young, arrested for drug offenses, had just been booked into the jail when Adaway was brought in for misdemeanor simple assault. While Adaway was compliant during booking, he resisted being placed in a group cell. Once inside, he attacked Young, striking him in the head more than a dozen times with his fists.
Young was hospitalized at Ochsner LSU Health, where doctors attempted surgery to relieve brain swelling. He died on June 20, 2022, from injuries sustained in the attack.
The case, docket No. 389905, was prosecuted by Assistant District Attorneys Christopher Bowman and Jason Waltman. Adaway was represented by Harry Johnson and Hillary Hileman.
