DRUMS – A Hazleton man is facing charges after police say he led them on a six-mile chase Sunday evening.
Aven S. Moronto, 22, of East Chestnut Street, is facing a felony charge of fleeing or eluding a police officer, along with charges of possession of a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia.
According to Butler Township Police, officers spotted a gray SUV driving erratically northbound on South Hunter Highway near Stonecroft Road. Officers said it was driving at a high rate of speed, passing numerous vehicles and failing to signal.
When officers attempted to stop the vehicle, it increased speed to over 100 miles per hour and Moronta, officers said, shut his lights off several times while crossing over the double-yellow line to pass other cars.
He stopped at South Mountain Road and Church Road in Mountain Top where he was taken into custody.
Officers said Moronta told police he was “sorry for doing that” and he was “having a bad day.”
He was arraigned and committed to Luzerne County Prison on $7,500 bail.
