On Aug. 1, 2025, shortly after 11 p.m., officers with the West Valley City Police Department were dispatched to reports of a shooting in the area of 2100 West Stone Creek Drive. Jason Handy, 38, was arrested Tuesday evening in connection with the shooting.
On the day of the shooting, police found one victim with a gunshot wound to the abdomen who was quickly transported to the hospital in critical condition.
According to charging documents, witnesses told officers they heard the victim arrive to the residence unannounced looking for an “ex-intimate partner.” Handy then came outside and allegedly started arguing with the victim.
During the argument, witnesses say the victim charged Handy, who then fired a shot, hitting the victim in the stomach area. Handy immediately fled the scene on foot.
Tuesday evening, police executed a search warrant at the residence and found a gun matching the same caliber as the one used in the shooting.
Court documents show Handy has a protective order that restricts him from possessing a firearm.
Handy is currently being held without bail in the Salt Lake County Jail, facing charges of felony discharge of a firearm — causing bodily injury and prohibited dangerous weapon conduct.
