Investigators say the crash happened around 11:39 p.m. Tuesday when a Honda passenger car struck a metal mattress spring lying in the road. The impact caused the spring to spark, prompting the Honda’s driver to stop and attempt to remove it while still in the roadway.
As the scene unfolded, the driver of a semi truck came to a stop in the roadway. Moments later, a Kia SUV crashed into the back of the stopped semi. The driver of the Kia died at the scene.
The victim’s name has not been released, and police say the incident remains under investigation by the department’s Traffic Homicide Unit.
Authorities have not said how the mattress spring ended up on the interstate but remind drivers to secure all loads and call 911 immediately to report debris in the roadway.
