Opelika crash on I-85 triggered by metal mattress spring kills 28-year-old woman

OPELIKA, Ala. (WRBL) – A late-night crash on Interstate 85 South near Exit 57 claimed the life of a 28-year-old woman after an unusual roadway hazard set off a chain of events, according to Opelika Police.

Investigators say the crash happened around 11:39 p.m. Tuesday when a Honda passenger car struck a metal mattress spring lying in the road. The impact caused the spring to spark, prompting the Honda’s driver to stop and attempt to remove it while still in the roadway.
