New study finds South Carolina among America’s worst places to live

SOUTH CAROLINA (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — A new study by WalletHub is casting a harsh spotlight on South Carolina’s overall livability, placing the Palmetto State among the worst in the nation.

Out of all 50 states, South Carolina ranked 44th in WalletHub’s 2025 “Best States to Live In” report, released this week. The study assessed states across five key dimensions: affordability, economy, education and health, quality of life, and safety, using 51 metrics ranging from housing costs and income growth to crime rates and access to quality healthcare.

While South Carolina earned high marks in affordability, ranking 9th, the state performed poorly in several other categories:

  • Education and health: 42nd
  • Quality of life: 34th
  • Safety: 46th

These rankings placed the state’s overall score at 45.65 out of 100, placing it just above Nevada, Alaska, and several Deep South states like Mississippi, Louisiana, and Arkansas.

Massachusetts topped the list with strong scores in education, healthcare, and quality of life. Idaho, New Jersey, Wisconsin, and Minnesota rounded out the top five.

North Carolina came in a No. 22 out of 50, ranking 17th in affordability, and 16th in economy and quality of life. Education and safety both ranked 35th on the list.

WalletHub’s study highlights the challenge of balancing affordability with access to quality services. Where one wants to live in the U.S. is a personal choice, and South Carolina has undeniable draws like coastal beauty, rich culture, and warm weather.
