New Horizon Goodwill donation center in Hagerstown helps those challenged in job market

HAGERSTOWN, Md. (DC News Now) — Hagerstown cut the ribbon on a new donation center Tuesday.

The new center encourages residents to bring their recycled, discarded items, but also to bring folks into the workforce who otherwise may not find employment.

Horizon Goodwill is a 70-year-old regional nonprofit aligned with Goodwill Industries. Horizon Goodwill President Sarah Rock says a lot of good for the community is done at the centers.

“This is a great opportunity for donating goods, to give back to the community we serve,” Rock said.

Horizon Goodwill is staffing the donation center with workers who are challenged in the job market, like Andrew Hambrick, who has a learning disability.

“They’ll never give up on you until they find something you’re good at,” Hambrick said. “They helped me out a lot over the years. There is a lot I wasn’t good at, and they searched and searched and found something I was good at.”

The new donation center not only supports employment programs like this one, which helps Hambrick, but the nonprofit is “eco-conscious,” Horizon CEO David Shuster said.

“We are all interested in sustainability and prolonging the health of our planet,” Shuster said.

The donation center is open seven days a week from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. It is located at 12813 Shank Farm Way, just off Leitersburg Pike, in Hagerstown.
