Fresno breaks ground on its first senior center

FRESNO, Calif. (KSEE/KGPE) – The City of Fresno broke ground Tuesday on its very first Senior Activity Center on Blackstone Avenue.

Cliff Dodd looks forward to using the senior center’s amenities.

“Keeps your muscles and joints going, your mind going. So, yes, I think it’s a great thing,” Dodd said.

Fresno’s Mayor Jerry Dyer says the center includes state-of-the-art features and activities designed exclusively for seniors.

There are pickleball courts, gardening areas, a coffee bar, a pool, a fitness center and more.

Dyer says the $41 million project is supported by local and federal funds and every dollar goes towards a better life for seniors.

“This is about creating an environment and a place where seniors feel loved, get connected, and create a sense of community,” Dyer said.

Fresno City Councilmember Tyler Maxwell says the Senior Center is long overdue.

“They have spent their lives serving and giving to this community. And now it is time for us to stand up, come together and to serve and to give back to them,” Maxwell said.

The center is expected to be completed by 2027.
