According to court documents filed on July 28, 2025, Gerhronda Cannady, a Black educator and longtime resident of Cabarrus County, said she was offered a position as an Exceptional Children’s Teacher in July 2021, but the offer was suddenly revoked the next day.
Cannady said she had already accepted the job and was invited to attend new employee orientation. But then, she was told the offer was rescinded because she had been marked “non-rehireable.” She believes this decision was racially motivated and said the job was given to a white applicant who was not equally qualified.
Cannady is suing under federal civil rights laws (42 U.S.C. §1981 and §1983), stating the school system violated her right to equal protection and caused her emotional and financial harm.
She is asking for a jury trial, a court declaration that the school board acted illegally, and compensation for legal fees and damages.
The Cabarrus County Board of Education has not yet publicly responded to the lawsuit.
