This animal center has been serving the Brownwood community since the 1970s and is currently facing difficulties in paying for materials and medicines vital to the care of their four-legged patience, as Executive Director for the animal center, Christian Berry, explained.
“Hardest hitting time and especially with the heat and everything, it’s harder for us to care for the animals because things cannot be left outside. Things cannot be left without water. But now, I mean, we’ve got to be moving at all times to keep these babies taken care of,” Berry said.
The services at the Corinne T. Smith Animal Center cover the first round of vaccinations, dewormer, flea preventative measures, a microchip, and a spay or neuter with all animals.
“We are the only shelter in the county. We are the only option there is for as far as you can go around here, for about an hour out from the nearest shelter. Right now, every adoption that we do is actually sending us into the hole by about $150,” Berry explained.
To help with fundraising efforts, the animal center is now in the midst of a series of free adoption events, with the next one prompting the public to come out for more than just the animals.
“We’re going to have donations from local businesses available for purchase. Vendors, food trucks, and, of course, free adoptions. We want to get as many people adopted as we can,” Berry shared.
The next free adoption event for the Corine T. Smith Animal Center will be Saturday, August 23, at the center at 3016 Milam Drive in Brownwood.
