As of 6 p.m. Monday, water continues to pump into the sky, prompting road closures and several mystified onlookers. It was just after 3:30 p.m. that SkyCam9 first flew above the scene in the 8600 block of W. Bryn Mawr, as water gushed from the ground.
WGN News has learned that a contractor struck a 48-inch water main line, with emergency crews now actively working to shut the water off, according to the Chicago Department of Water Management.
No customers are affected, the city’s water management team added.
Despite the scene that some said resembled more of a fountain, some locals expressed optimism.
“I kind of want to get my bathing suit on and hop in,” one local man joked. “But once I lose water, then I’ll start crying. Then, it’ll be a different story.”
Others felt uneasy about the lack of water in case another emergency arises.
“The main concern is that we’re not going to have water in case there’s a fire or something, and that’s a biggie,” another man said.
