Texas man arrested for hitting officer with bicycle during police pursuit, documents say

Charges are allegations only. All arrested persons are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.

SOUTH SALT LAKE, Utah (ABC4) — A Texas man has been arrested after allegedly riding his bicycle into an officer during a pursuit, causing the police officer to be hospitalized.

Benjamin Frederick Williams, 43, has been arrested and is being held on assault on a peace officer, interfering with a police officer, failure to stop at the command of law enforcement, three counts of possession of a controlled substance, and prohibited dangerous weapon conduct.

According to court documents, on Aug. 10, 2025, a South Salt Lake Police officer observed a man, later identified as Williams, riding his bicycle on the sidewalk, which is prohibited by city ordinance. The officer turned on his lights and tried to stop Williams.

The arresting officer reports that Williams ignored commands to stop and rode his bicycle away down the sidewalk. The officer pursued him in his vehicle, and another police officer responded and attempted to stop Williams on foot.

Williams allegedly rode his bicycle directly into the officer, who was on foot, instead of trying to stop. The officer was able to tackle Williams off the bicycle, but sustained an injury to his face and was hospitalized.

Police took Williams into custody, and several officers had to assist due to his resisting the officers. On his person, police allegedly found what they believe to be fentanyl, methamphetamine, marijuana, and a large blade.

Documents say that Williams has “several active felony and misdemeanor warrants” and “continues to possess dangerous weapons and flees from law enforcement.” He also allegedly has a criminal history in Texas.

Williams was booked into the Salt Lake County Jail, where he is currently being held without bail. He has not been formally charged by the District Attorney’s Office as of Monday.
