Tesla opening Supercharger station in this affluent SF neighborhood

SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) — Tesla owners in San Francisco have been frustrated with wait times at Supercharger stations, especially during off-peak hours when prices are lowest. Those lines may get a little shorter as Tesla is opening up a new charging station in one of the city’s more affluent neighborhoods.

A new Tesla Supercharger is opening in San Francisco’s Marina District. The charging station is located at 1965 Lombard St., near the intersection of Lombard and Webster streets. KRON4 was at the Supercharger station and spotted 15 chargers, which are the newest edition that charge at the fastest speeds available (up to 325 kW).

There is no set opening date for when the Tesla Supercharging station will open.

The Lombard Street station would be the third in San Francisco, joining the Geary Street and 16th Street locations. There are several more public Tesla chargers, but those are pay-to-park.

According to the San Francisco Planning Department, Tesla filed an application with the city in November 2024 and received approval in January. Tesla was approved for construction by the SF Department of Building Inspection in March.

The Tesla Supercharger station takes over the parking lot that was once affiliated with Hotel Del Sol, according to city documents.

In California, it’s hard not to spot a Tesla. The best-selling vehicle in the state has been the Tesla Model Y for the third year in a row — many of those sold to residents in San Francisco and the greater Bay Area.

There are currently more than 7,500 Tesla Supercharger stations and 70,000 individual charging connectors — the world’s largest fast charging network. Tesla was founded in 2003 in San Carlos and is now headquartered in Austin, Texas.

KRON4 reached out to Tesla for information about when the opening date of the charging station will be. We did not hear back in time for publication.
