The team announced Tuesday they are inviting fans to the Wrigley Field area on Friday August 22 starting at 9:30 a.m.. The private funeral service for Sandberg will be broadcast on the video board at Gallagher Way.
The Cubs legend passed away last month in hospice care following complications in his ongoing battle with prostate cancer. He was 65.
Fans are also invited to pay their respects at the Sandberg statue located in Gallagher Way.
No ticket is required.
“The Cubs organization is grateful for the continued support of Cubs fans and their expression of compassion during this difficult time,” said Cubs President of Business Operations Crane Kenney said in a statement. “Beyond his family, Ryno’s great loves were spending time with teammates and other Cubs players and interacting with Cubs fans. We hope this public tribute provides everyone touched by Ryne’s incredible talent as a player and person an opportunity to honor his legacy and pay their respects.”
In lieu of flowers, the Sandberg family has asked participating fans to bring a nonperishable food item to Gallagher Way which will be donated to Nourishing Hope and Most Blessed Trinity Food Pantry.
