The investigation and information obtained revealed that CPSO Deputy Drakel Carter and an individual had a verbal dispute that led to a physical altercation. On August 11, 2025, LSP CID arrested Deputy Carter for simple battery and malfeasance in office. Deputy Carter was processed for the outstanding warrants at the CPSO Detention Center without incident.
“The public has a right to know when someone entrusted with upholding the law is charged with violating it,” said Sheriff Hedrick. “An investigation being conducted with the Louisiana State Police will determine our next steps.”
The Louisiana State Police will serve as the lead investigative agency. The investigation remains active and ongoing, and no further information is available at this time.
The Louisiana State Police online reporting system is also available to the public through a convenient and secure reporting form that is submitted to the appropriate investigators. Citizens can access the form by visiting www.lsp.org and clicking the Suspicious Activity link, or calling the LSP Fusion Center Hotline at 1-800-434-8007.
