5 shot near 43rd and Cottage Grove on Chicago’s South Side

CHICAGO (WGN) — At least five people were shot during a single incident on the city’s South Side Monday afternoon, according to authorities.

The Chicago Fire Department said the shooting took place near the intersection of East 43rd Street and South Cottage Grove Avenue, and at least five people were shot during the incident.

The Chicago Police Department said they responded to a call that someone was shot in the 700 block of East 43rd Street just before 3:30 p.m.

When police arrived, they said they found five victims, three men and two women in the age range of 35 to 72, who were hit by gunfire.

Firefighters said three adults were taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center in serious-to-critical condition, while another adult was taken there in fair condition. A fifth adult was also taken in good condition to Provident Hospital in Grand Boulevard.

“I’ve seen a lot,” Said Michelle Stogner, who lives in the Judge Slater Apartments near where the shooting happened. She said she doesn’t know the victims, but over the years, has lost family members to gun violence.

It’s something that has her fed up and frustrated with how little is thought of life in these situations.

“Put [the guns] down, find something positive to do. Think about your family members you have—grandparents, elderly people in your family,” Stogner said. “Think about what you can lose when you’re not thinking anyone else’s life is valuable.”

Police have no details on an offender and no one in custody at this time.
