The National Weather Service issued a heat advisory, warning that temperatures could exceed 100 degrees and will remain above 70 degrees overnight before temperatures spike again on Tuesday.
Starting at noon Monday, the state of emergency will go into effect, opening three daytime shelters, and extending operating hours for some Multnomah County libraries.
The shelters open from 12 p.m. to 9 p.m. are:
- Gateway Church: 13300 Northeast San Rafael Street, Portland
- Congregation Beth Israel: 1972 Northwest Flanders Street, Portland
- Portland Covenant Church: 4046 Northeast Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard, Portland
Four Multnomah County libraries will be extending their operating hours until 8 p.m.
- Albina Library: 205 Northeast Russell St., Portland
- Central Library: 801 Southwest 10th Ave., Portland
- Gresham Library: 385 Northwest Miller Ave., Gresham
- Midland Library: 805 Southeast 122nd Ave., Portland
From 11 a.m. to 10 p.m., TriMet will also be offering free rides to cooling spaces for anyone who is unable to pay the fare.
When it comes to heat, the Health Department says it is important to have a plan to stay safe.
“With two more hot days and warm nights on the way, everyone should make a plan to stay safe,’’ said Health Officer Dr. Richard Bruno.
According to the Health Department, almost all heat deaths within the county since 2021 have been people who died at home.
“It’s going to be dangerously hot the next few days, and we want to make sure people in our community are staying safe by avoiding heat and checking on neighbors and loved ones who may be at increased risk of heat-related illness,” said Dr. Bruno.
The county is also urging people to drink more water and to seek air-conditioned spaces for relief.
County residents can also call 211 to find information about the nearest cooling centers and for transportation support.
