Springfield man accused of involvement in dual-state theft ring

PIKE COUNTY, Ill. (WCIA) — A Springfield man was arrested and is facing charges in Pike County after law enforcement said he was believed to be a “key figure” in a theft ring responsible for stolen vehicles, trailers and lawn equipment across Illinois and Missouri.

47-year-old Richard A. Wilson was arrested on Aug. 4.

The Pike County Sheriff’s Department said the arrest stems from a string of thefts that took place between April 28 and July 22. The department received multiple reports that property had been stolen across the county during that time, including side-by-side utility vehicles, dirt bikes, zero-turn mowers and utility trailers taken from both residential and commercial properties.

The cases were assigned to Chief Deputy Zack Orr to investigate. After reviewing surveillance footage, analyzing electronic evidence and speaking with other law enforcement agencies in Illinois and Missouri, investigators connected the Pike County thefts to incidents in Piatt, Fayette, Franklin and Tazewell Counties, along with thefts in Missouri.

“Several court-authorized search warrants were executed, ultimately linking the stolen property to a broader, organized theft operation,” the Pike County Sheriff’s Department said in a news release.

The investigative work of Illinois State Police Sergeant Bradley Wassell helped law enforcement identify a suspect. Then on Aug. 4, investigators arrested Wilson in Springfield on a Pike County warrant for theft over $10,000 and a warrant issued in Missouri for possession of a stolen motor vehicle.

Orr, along with the Illinois State Police and the Sangamon County Sheriff’s Office, searched a home near the intersection of East Miller and North 17th Streets on Aug. 4. They recovered multiple electronic devices and other evidence believed to have been involved in the theft, the Pike County Sheriff’s Department said.

“The arrest of this suspect represents a significant turning point in a complex, multi-jurisdictional investigation,” Chief Deputy Orr said. “We anticipate additional arrests and charges as the investigation continues.”

The investigation is ongoing, and the involved law enforcement agencies are still working to find more of the stolen property.
