COLUMBIA, S.C. (WSAV) — South Carolina Representative Robert John “RJ” May resigned from the state’s House of Representatives in a letter addressed to the Speaker of the House on Aug. 7.

The letter was received by the South Carolina Statehouse Monday. WSAV obtained a copy of the letter.

May was arrested and indicted in June on counts of distributing child sex abuse material.

In the letter he said, “Dear Mr. Speaker, I have decided that it is in the best interest of my family and constituents to resign immediately from the South Carolina House of Representatives. Please accept this letter as my formal resignation from the South Carolina House of Representatives. It has been an honor to serve the people of District 88.”

May represented House District 88 in Lexington County since 2021.
