Portions of western Carmel under boil water notice after reported main break

Update

According to officials with the Carmel Utilities Department, all drinking water customers of Carmel Utilities west of College Avenue are under a boil water notice. This comes after a reported loss of pressure in the department’s drinking water system.

The department said on their website that this occurred after a fire hydrant “was unexpectedly blown off the water line.” They said this could cause potential contamination of the water supply. In an update on Monday afternoon, Carmel Utilities told FOX59/CBs4 that 15,000 services were impacted.

The department is advising all customers in the mapped area to boil water before consuming it until further notice. Customers should bring all water to a rolling boil for at least one minute and let it cool before using it for:

  • Drinking
  • Cooking or food preparation
  • Brushing teeth
  • Making ice
  • Washing fruit or vegetables.

Customers should not use ice from automatic ice makers or drinking fountains until the system has been flushed and tested.

“We are actively working to repair the system and restore normal pressure,” the department said. “Once pressure is restored, water samples will be collected and tested to ensure safety. This advisory will remain in effect until we confirm through lab testing that the water is safe to drink.”

According to officials with the city of Carmel’s utilities department, the city’s water operations department stated that there is a “known water main break affecting much of western Carmel.”

The department said that they are “working to identify, call in utility locates and (effect) repair.”

“At this time, there is no time frame known for restoration of service,” the city’s utilities department said on its website. “Carmel Utilities apologizes for the inconvenience and will restore service as quickly as possible.”

In a post on social media, Carmel Utilities said that the issue has been identified and crews are working on the repair. The department did not provide a timeframe for restoration.

The utilities department said they will update information on the main break as more details become available.
