According to Mecklenburg County court documents, Cherez Davis, 40, was taken into custody Saturday, August 9, after allegedly firing a gun into the air during a gathering of around 100 people at the C.W. Williams Community Health Center on Wilkinson Boulevard.
The event was the 11th annual back-to-school health fair, featuring free services and visits from Charlotte-area leaders, including U.S. Congresswoman Dr. Alma Adams.
No one was hurt in the incident, but the shots caused chaos as attendees ran for safety.
Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police said officers responded to a “shots fired” call at around 1:08 p.m. Witnesses described the shooter as a woman wearing a black shirt, jeans, and Crocs, with braided hair. Officers located Davis, who matched the description, and detained her.
In statements to CMPD, Davis said a fight had broken out between her son and another child, and that when an adult got involved, she pulled a handgun, a Taurus G6, from her backpack and fired two shots into the air to break up the fight.
After the shots rang out and the crowd scattered, Davis put the firearm back in her bag and walked away, according to court documents. The gun was later recovered and taken as evidence.
Davis has been charged with going armed to the terror of the people and carrying a concealed weapon, a misdemeanor. She posted a $50,000 bond on Saturday, according to records.
She appeared in court for the first time on Monday afternoon.
