LIV Golf teeing up history-making weekend in Westfield

WESTFIELD, Ind. — Expect action and drama in central Indiana this week as some of the top golfers from around the world compete in Westfield for LIV Golf.

Bryson DeChambeau, Jon Rahm, Phil Mickelson, Bubba Watson and dozens of golfers are on their way to Indy for a weekend that’s sure to be a hole in one at The Club at Chatham Hills.

“We’d really like to knock it out of the park here,” said Tournament Director Tim Flaherty. “I think we have the potential to have the biggest LIV event, in the US, in the four-year history of LIV.”

Roughly a year ago, the Club at Chatham Hills was selected to host. Now Flaherty and his team are getting ready to welcome 15,000 to 20,000 spectators.

“The response in the Indianapolis market has been great, we’ve got unprecedented ticket sales. We filled the volunteer allotment in two weeks,” said Flaherty.

There will be fan villages, kids’ areas, concerts and video and ribbon boards across the course.

“There are 200 speakers for music, while the players are playing, which is something that surprises people when they get here,” Flaherty added. “But LIV Golf is about expanding the game and bringing the game to a different audience.”

Fans can expect different stages and seating options, from the Indy sports bar, where they will be a DJ right off the tee box along with food and drinks, to Club 54, which overlooks Hole 18.

“We love to show up here in Indy for sports,” said Betsy Henke Garfield with Henke Development Group.

“I feel like it has really, for Indy people, they’ll completely relate to some of the hospitality. It has a very ‘pagoda’ (feel), get your black sunglasses out, come watch golf, come enjoy,” she said.

The course has undergone major improvements to prepare for this weekend. For Henke Garfield, it’s a way to share Chatham Hills and Pete Dye’s legacy with the golf world.

“Many know his courses around the world. Very few know this is the last one that he both designed and had his hands in the dirt,” she explained. “He was here hundreds of hours with his dog on site. Every green, every contour, but even fewer know he’s a Hoosier.”

“Let’s fill this place up and really show off Westfield, Hamilton County and Indianapolis,” Flaherty said.

LIV is a 54-hole tournament with a shotgun start. It’s not an all-day play like other tournaments; they have about a five-hour window of golf, which is unique.
