Call 811 before you dig: PECO issues reminder

(WPHL) — PECO is reminding customers to use safe practices when planning projects that involve digging. 

August 11 is National Call Before You Dig Day, which reminds residents, businesses, and contractors to call 811 before digging to identify the location of underground utilities. 

A press release from PECO says safe digging is a priority to prevent infrastructure damage and keep the community safe. 

PECO says anyone planning to dig should call at least three business days in advance of the project so underground utilities can be avoided.  

“Every digging project, no matter how large or small, warrants a call to 811,” the press release says. 

PECO lists installing a mailbox, building a deck, planting a tree, and laying a patio as examples of projects that require a call to 811. 

The Common Ground Alliance, a national association to protect underground utility lines and their communities, released results from a survey this year that found 27.2 million homeowners nationwide planning digging projects will not contact 811. 

The Common Ground Alliance says digging without knowing utility locations could lead to serious injuries, service outages, and expensive repairs. 

PECO recommends confirming 811 has been called when working with contractors and considering moving a project if it is near utility lines.
