Back to School: New safety rules for Iredell-Statesville sports fans
IREDELL COUNTY, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — Summer break is officially over for some North Carolina students as schools in Cabarrus County and the Iredell-Statesville School District welcomed students back to class Monday morning.

But for fans gearing up for ‘Friday Night Lights,’ there are new rules to follow. As the first football games kick off next Friday in the Iredell-Statesville district, the school system is rolling out a new clear bag policy at all athletic events, a shift from last year’s “no bag” rule.

Starting this year, Iredell-Statesville Schools will implement a clear bag policy for all athletic events, the district said in a statement.

Only clear bags and medically necessary items will be allowed in the games.

The district initially installed metal detectors and banned all bags at games last year to speed up entry and improve security. But after hearing feedback from fans, the policy has been adjusted to allow a more convenient, but still safe, option.

Here’s what you can bring into the stadium:

  • Clear plastic or vinyl bags
  • Clear ziplock-style bags
  • Clear backpacks
  • Clear fanny packs or crossbody-style bags

The school district is also keeping two other key rules in place:

  1. No re-entry. Once you leave the game, you can’t come back in
  2. All children not in high school must be with a parent or guardian during the event

“Our top priority is to provide a safe and supportive environment for our student-athletes, coaches, and fans,” said Bryan Paslay, Director of Athletics. “As we prepare for the season ahead, we’re excited to see our teams compete and represent their schools with pride.”

Meanwhile, Queen City News has reached out to the Iredell-Statesville district regarding reports of overcrowding in schools in the southern part of Iredell County due to population growth. So far, the district has not responded to us with a plan to address these concerns.
