The National Weather Service’s extreme heat warning is set to take effect at 12 p.m. and expected to last until Tuesday, Aug. 12 at 10 p.m.
According to the KOIN 6 Weather Team,
With the heat on the way, here is a comprehensive list of places to stay cool:
Multnomah County
The county said as of Sunday morning, they are not officially opening cooling centers and they look at a number of variables to determine whether to open them to begin with. These include air quality, how long the maximum temperature will be high, as well as whether the National Weather Service has declared a heat advisory, watch or warning,
Only when the NWS determines the county is at an extreme risk is the time they automatically open those overnight cooling centers. As of Sunday, the county is in the red zone, meaning we aren’t there yet.
“There is a larger conversation around red because there’s one thing that could get us there, but there’s a lot of factors that we’ve got to consider,” said Chris Voss, Multnomah County’s Director of Emergency Management.
On Monday, the county says they look at heat-related 911 calls, emergency room visits and a number of other factors to determine their next step.
If cooling centers open, information about locations and hours will be posted here.
In the meantime, the county has a number of community centers, splash pads, interactive fountains and pools available on its Stay Cool! interactive map.
Additionally, the Midland, Albina and Central Libraries are extending their hours until 8 p.m. Sunday and all other libraries will be open until 6 p.m.
