GREENBELT, Md. (DC News Now) — Heavy smoke could be seen billowing in the sky and traffic was backed up on Route 201 after a dump truck caught fire in Greenbelt Saturday afternoon.

Details regarding the incident are limited; however, in a post on the X platform just minutes before 2 p.m., Greenbelt police said traffic was delayed on southbound Route 201 near the southbound Interstate 95 exit ramp because of a dump truck on fire in the roadway.

A photo shared by the department showed smoke coming from the truck as firefighters extinguished the flames.

Ricardo Dennis, a spokesperson for the Greenbelt Police Department, told DC News Now that no one was hurt in the fire and that no other vehicles were involved. The scorched truck was cleared from the roadway at around 3 p.m., fully reopening the roadway to drivers.

At this time, it is unclear what caused the fire to ignite.
