Around 9:15 p.m. on Saturday, August 9, crews responded to the crash at the Fifth Third Bank on Highway 24/27. Officials said a work van left the road, struck and snapped a telephone pole before crashing into an ATM and the building.
Cabarrus EMS responded to treat one person in critical condition who was taken by helicopter to a local hospital. The person had to be extricated after the vehicle was stabilized by firefighters, officials said.
Traffic was shut down on Hwy 601 to establish a landing zone for the helicopter.
First responders from surrounding counties helped stabilize the building and get the ATM and the money. Duke Power crews also responded to repair the power pole and lines, which were fixed Sunday morning.
