According to the Springfield Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol, the crash happened on Lower Valley Pike, near Cloverdale Road, Bethel Twp., at approximately 9:35 p.m.
The initial investigation found a silver 2014 Chevrolet Cruze was heading northeast on Lower Valley Pike. The pedestrian, 46-year-old Jason Caponera, from Yonkers, New York, was walking northeast on Lower Valley Pike, on the shoulder.
Officials said two dogs from a nearby residence ran across the street and jumped onto him. They said he attempted to escape by going towards the road. The Cruze hit both him and a dog.
The driver was uninjured.
The dog had a minor injury.
Medics took Caponera to Mercy Health in Enon, where he died from his injuries.
A 911 caller was in extreme distress because of the crash. A second caller was nearby in their backyard when the crash happened. They said the man was struggling to breathe and bleeding heavily from his head as others checked him. A third caller walked over to help after hearing the crash.
The crash is under active investigation by the Springfield Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol.
