North Carolinians hit with high electric bills following heatwave

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. (WNCN) — A lot of North Carolinians are left with high electric bills after weeks of above 90-degree temperatures. 

Utility companies say air conditioners account for most of the energy usage in homes during the summertime. High electric bills are even breaking the budget and bank for some families.

Electric companies say there are relief options, including payment plans, if you can’t afford the bill. They do urge customers to call customer service before the bill is due to find out their options. 

“They can talk to a customer service representatives, set up a payment program. We do have a lot of partnerships within the community,” said Gavin MacRoberts, Communications Manager of Fayetteville Public Works Commission. “So, maybe a local non-profit might have some way of helping out if there’s an extremely high utility bill.”

Meanwhile, there are a few things you can do to lessen your usage and save money.

Experts suggest keeping your home cool by closing your blinds, adjusting your thermostat to 78 degrees when you’re away, using the ceiling fan more and wearing lighter clothes when you’re at home.
