During a press conference, Reid Davis, FBI special agent in charge of the Washington Field Office Criminal Division, said that at around 6 a.m. on Aug. 8, agents were executing a criminal arrest warrant at The Alexander Apartments when the person they were trying to arrest leaped from a 15th-story balcony.
Agents tried to save the person, but he died. At the scene, several police cars could be seen lining the street in front of the building, with police tape sectioning off the area.
As of Friday morning, the person’s identity has not been released as officials work to notify their immediate family. Authorities have also not disclosed what the arrest warrant was for; however, Alexandria Police Chief Tarrick McGuire noted that there is no threat to the community.
“We are grateful to our partners at the Alexandria Police Department and Alexandria Fire Department for their immediate response and assistance,” the FBI said, in part, in a statement to DC News Now.
As a result of the investigation, eastbound King Street was down to one lane, and police closed the sidewalk from Hampton to Park Center.
Virginia’s Office of the Chief Medical Examiner will determine the official cause of death.
