Norfork School Board considering adding volleyball, adds goals for new superintendent

The Norfork School Board met in a special session Monday night and began discussions of adding volleyball as a new sport and added new goals to the contract of superintendent Richard Blevins.Blevins tells KTLO, Classic Hits and The Boot News he had only been at the school a few days when he was stopped in the hall by a couple of female students asking if he could get volleyball added because most of the other schools in the area had it and they wanted to play. Blevins says there was a petition a few years ago with a large number of signatures also asking to add the sport.
There will be a booth set up during the open house at Norfork Thursday for potential players in both high school and junior high. Blevins says if there is enough interest, they will begin playing games this year as an independent team, and then become sanctioned with the Arkansas Activities Association next year so will be placed in a conference.

Blevins also wants to remind students there will be a booth set up during the open house for anyone interested in the Junior Firefighter program which will be taught by volunteer firefighters from the five fire districts that are in the Norfork School Disctrict. The program would be for ages 14 and up. Those who take the course would receive volunteer hours towards graduation.

The board also amended Blevins’ contract to add three goals for him to meet during the upcoming school year. They include a 5% growth in proficiency, improve the state rankings for the schools to an A for the elementary and a B for the high school and ensure the graduation rate is above 90%.

The board also approved the resignation of a 7th and 8th grade math teacher, moved an elementary math teacher into that position, moved an aide into the elementary math teacher position and hired a new aide.
