According to police, she is unharmed and safe. She will be reunited with her family.
“We are relieved to share that missing juvenile Katie Hong has been located this afternoon,” police said. “She is unharmed and safe, pending to be reunited with her family.”
“We are grateful for everyone’s support and assistance during this search,” police added. “More details will be shared as they become available.”
Sixteen-year-old Katie was last seen Friday July 25, when she was caught on surveillance camera headed on foot toward Irvington Community Park. According to police, Katie had left a note indicating she was going to meet people in-person who she had previously only met on an online chat platform.
She did not know their real names, only their chat handles, and the note indicated they were unwilling to provide their actual names. Katie, who was active across several online and gaming platforms, went dark online after she disappeared.
She also left her cellphone at Irvington Community Park at the time of her disappearance.
Katie’s disappearance prompted a massive effort from Fremont PD and federal law enforcement partners. Katie’s parents launched a GoFundMe, took time off work, and hired private investigators to aid in the search.
“Praise God! We just got word that the police found Katie!” read an update to the GoFundMe. “Safe and unharmed! So grateful! Thank you all! This would not have been possible without you.”
The GoFundMe at last count, has raised over $70,000. The family said that any unused funds will be donated to nonprofit organizations that focus on finding and rescuing missing children.
Police said the note Katie left indicated she expressed the intention of “running away” and characterized her disappearance as “voluntarily missing.”
No other details were immediately available regarding the nature of Katie’s disappearance or how she had been found.
