Dog bakery opens storefront in Downtown Fresno
FRESNO, Calif. (KSEE/KGPE) – After a year and a half of pop-up vending, a Fresno-based business owner is opening her long-awaited storefront in Downtown Fresno to bring nutritious, sweet treats to the Central Valley’s “pup-stomers.”

Ebony Brown is the “Leader of the Pack” of the Bentley’s Barkery dog bakery team. She says she didn’t start her business with a culinary background, or even the intention of making money.

“I like to say, I’ve been preparing for this my whole life,” Brown said. “Secretly.”

Brown says she was working in real estate when her beloved dog Bentley started feeling sick.

“He was having, like, a lot of ear infections,” Brown said. “‘He had to have a surgery, and I was like, okay, how can we stop this?'”

According to Brown, her veterinarian told her that Bentley’s treats were the cause of his illness, prompting Brown to take a closer look at the treats’ ingredients.

“Some I could pronounce and some I could not,” Brown said.

While Brown says that she was not an experienced baker, she was a fan of Martha Stewart and had already made a habit of collecting cooking materials and equipment.

Brown says that rather than remove treats from Bentley’s diet, she decided to put her equipment to use and started making Bentley his own treats.

Before long, Brown started participating in pop-up events, including ArtHop in Downtown Fresno – consistently selling out.

“It was a turning point for me,” Brown said. “Imposter syndrome is still something that I deal with – but it’s usually defeated by the end of the day because of the response from the community.”

Brown says thanks to a loyal community of customers, she’s been able to open a storefront in Downtown Fresno and she plans to dedicate a four-day celebration to the community for helping make it possible.

On Friday, Aug. 8, Brown plans to welcome the neighbors and hold a formal ribbon-cutting. Saturday will be customer appreciation day, and on Sunday customers will be invited to a friends and family day at the park.

“It’s not my barkery,” Brown said. I do it for the community.”

Bentley’s Barkery is located at 1612 Fulton St. near the Cultural Arts District Park.
