Zaib Un Nisa Afridi, 50, of Daly City, changed her plea from “not guilty” to “no contest” in court this week. Her 21-year-old son, Maarij Afridi, is charged with murdering a custodian who worked in a gym.
According to prosecutors, on September 29, 2024, Maarij Afridi got into an argument with the custodian, 60-year-old Rolando Yanga, while Yanga was cleaning the gym. The argument reportedly stemmed from Maarij Afridi breaking gym rules about cleanliness.
Around 7 p.m. that evening, Zaib Un Nisa Afridi and her son followed the victim from the gym to the victim’s home on South Mayfair Avenue in Daly City, prosecutors said.
The mother thought that her son was “just going to confront the victim,” prosecutors said. “Instead her son shot and killed the victim” in the driveway of Yanga’s home while Zaib Un Nisa Afridi watched the homicide unfold, the DA’s office wrote. The victim was shot multiple times.
After the killing, the mother acted as a getaway driver and helped her son hide from Daly City Police Department detectives, according to the DA’s office. Zaib Un Nisa Afridi drove the alleged killer to her sister’s home in Sacramento “in order to help him hide,” prosecutors wrote.
A SWAT team found and arrested the son on September 30, 2024. He is currently facing first-degree murder charges.
With a jury trial looming, the mother avoiding standing trial by pleading “no contest” to felony accessory to murder Wednesday.
Under a plea agreement, Zaib Un Nisa Afridi faces a maximum of three years in prison. She will remain out of custody on $100,000 bond until her sentencing hearing, which is scheduled for September 23.
Meanwhile, her son remains behind bars without bail. Maarij Afridi has pleaded not guilty to all charges and he is set to return to court in December.
