CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WBOY) — The removal of soda from West Virginia’s Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program will begin at the start of the year, the West Virginia Department of Human Services said Thursday.
According to a press release from the DoHS, the change made possible by a waiver granted to the state on Aug. 4
The new restriction will include regular soda, diet soda and zero-calorie soda.
“All SNAP-authorized retailers in West Virginia are expected to fully comply with this policy,” the DoHS said in the release. “[Bureau for Family Assistance] will provide technical assistance and support to SNAP retailers to help implement the new requirements in advance of the January 1, 2026 effective date.”
The DoHS will make a statewide survey available in 2026 to collect public comments on the soda restriction. In the meantime, questions and comments can be made using the DoHS Public Comments Line at 1-877-716-1212 or email DoHSPublicComments@wv.gov.
