The Ichabod’s are coming off a 3-8 campaign in 2024 and were picked to finish ninth out of 10 teams in the MIAA preseason coaches’ poll, but don’t expect that ranking to define the team.
“We have to be aware of the rankings but we’re a process driven program,” Watkins told 27 Sports. “The type of work we’ve been able to put in I have no doubt we’ll be in a good spot come the season.”
Watkins, who served as Washburn’s defensive coordinator, was promoted to head coach in the off-season.
His familiarity with the program and players has made for a smoother transition heading into camp.
Wednesday’s practice brought high energy and a sense of urgency. Players say there’s a different tone around the team — and a renewed focus on discipline and effort.
“We just have to take each day and be better than the day before,” graduate quarterback Justin Lewis said. “That’s something we’re going to buy in all season and you’ll see the results on Saturday’s.”
Lewis is a graduate transfer from Merrimack where he appeared in one game against Connecticut, completing all six passes for 103 yards and one touchdown.
The Ichabod’s are a younger squad but have seen an offseason growth in the dedication towards the program.
“From last summer to this summer, this is a more bought in team,” sophomore linebacker J.C. Heim said. “More people are speaking up, holding each other accountable, and that’s what you want in a player led team.”
Washburn kicks off its 2025 season at home against Truman State University on August 30.
